GOOD MORNING, CODY AND DONNA. OUR STORM FROM YESTERDAY HAS MOVED OFF. THE CLOUDS WILL BE CLEARING AS WELL, BUT UNFORTUNATELY IT DID DROP A LOT OF RAIN. UPWARDS OF THREE INCHES OF RAIN IN SOME AREAS. SO WE STILL HAVE FLOODING THIS MORNING ALONG THE BLACKWATER, THE BIG CREEK, THE LEMOYNE, THE MURDER SCENE STILL FLOODING AND PROBABLY WILL REMAIN IN FLOOD FOR THE NEXT FEW DAYS. HERE’S OUR FORECAST THOUGH FOR TODAY. MOSTLY SUNNY SKIES, HIGH TEMPERATURE WILL MAKE IT INTO THE LOWER 70S AND IT WON’T BE WINDY TODAY, WHICH IS PROBABLY THE NICEST FEATURE ABOUT THE WEATHER TODAY. KATIE. THANK YOU. HERE ARE NINE THINGS TO KNOW RIGHT NOW AS YOU HEAD OUT THE DOOR THIS MORNING. CATHOLICS AROUND THE WORLD ARE MOURNING THE DEATH OF POPE FRANCIS. THE VATICAN ANNOUNCED THE POPE DIED EARLY THIS MORNING AFTER BATTLING SEVERAL HEALTH ISSUES THIS YEAR. JUST YESTERDAY, THE POPE GREETED WORSHIPERS FOR EASTER IN SAINT PETER’S SQUARE. PEOPLE WILL BE ASSESSING THE DAMAGE AFTER STRONG STORMS. YESTERDAY IN MISSOURI, OUR AREA SAW ONLY FLOODING. BUT IN CENTRAL MISSOURI, STORMS CAUSED A LOT OF DAMAGE, INCLUDING TO THIS RECYCLING CENTER IN COLUMBIA. ONLY MINOR INJURIES REPORTED IN MOORE, OKLAHOMA. TWO PEOPLE WERE KILLED ON FLOODED ROADS WHEN STORMS HIT THERE. A MOTHER AND HER SON DIED WHEN THEIR CAR WENT INTO A DRAINAGE DITCH. NOW, THIS HAPPENED JUST AFTER 9:00 SATURDAY NIGHT WHEN THEY TRIED TO DRIVE ON ROADS NOT BLOCKED OFF BY POLICE. FIRST RESPONDERS FOUND THEIR BODIES EARLY SUNDAY MORNING. TWO TEENS ARE DEAD AFTER A CRASH IN JOHNSON COUNTY, KANSAS, LATE SATURDAY NIGHT. STATE TROOPERS TELL US 17 YEAR-OLD JOSE CASTANEDA WAS DRIVING SOUTH ON 69 HIGHWAY NEAR 58TH STREET WITH 18 YEAR-OLD ITZEL GUERRA IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. TROOPERS SAY THEIR CAR CROSSED INTO THE NORTHBOUND LANES, HITTING ANOTHER CAR HEAD ON. BOTH TEENS DIED AND THE OTHER DRIVER IS BADLY HURT. WE WILL FIND OUT TODAY IF THE JACKSON COUNTY LEGISLATURE WILL TRY AGAIN TO ROLL BACK PROPERTY TAX INCREASES FROM 2023. LAST WEEK, IT VOTED TO ENFORCE THE ROLLBACK OF 2023 ASSESSMENT INCREASES FOLLOWING AN ORDER FROM THE STATE TAX COMMISSION. BUT THEN FRIDAY, COUNTY EXECUTIVE FRANK WHITE VETOED THAT ROLLBACK PLAN. COMMISSIONERS HAVE SPOKEN OUT AGAINST THAT VETO AND COULD BRING UP THE ISSUE AFTER AT THEIR MEETING TODAY. CNN IS NOW REPORTING DEFENSE SECRETARY PETE HEGSETH SHARED DETAILED PLANS ABOUT A MILITARY OPERATION IN YEMEN. IN A SECOND SIGNAL GROUP CHAT. THREE PEOPLE FAMILIAR WITH THE MATTER TELL CNN. HEGSETH USED HIS PERSONAL PHONE FOR THE CHAT AND THAT HIS WIFE, BROTHER AND LAWYER WERE ALL A PART OF IT. HECK SAYS BROTHER AND LAWYER WORKED FOR THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE, BUT HIS WIFE DOES NOT. A DAY AFTER MEETING POPE FRANCIS, VICE PRESIDENT J.D. VANCE IS NOW IN INDIA FOR A FOUR DAY VISIT. FIRST DAY WILL FOCUS ON TARIFF TALKS BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES. JACKSON COUNTY, Mo. —

A required six-vote majority to override Jackson County Executive Frank White’s veto of an ordinance tied to property tax assessments failed Monday.

Legislators Megan Marshall, Jeanie Lauer, Charlie Franklin and Jalen Anderson upheld White’s veto.

“This ordinance does not fix the issues the community deserve or fix the assessments process,” Marshall said.

Marshall called the 2023 assessment process flawed and chaotic, but said the ordinance “does not fix the issues.”

“We need to lead with responsibility,” she said. “This ordinance is a reaction and not a solution.”

Like Marshall, Lauer raised concerns about school districts and public safety losing revenue as a result of the rollback.

Legislator Sean Smith, who introduced the ordinance, said the process harmed Jackson County property owners.

“They were wronged,” Smith said. “They were wronged. They were overbilled by a quarter of a billion dollars. We need to take every step to fix that.”

Smith said lawmakers needed to “side with the taxpayer” rather than “the lawless administration that continues to break the law.”

Legislator Manny Abarca said the four legislators were “ceding authority to an empty chair.”

White did not attend Monday’s meeting.

“This ordinance misstates the facts, violates our Charter, and jeopardizes funding for schools, public safety and vital services,” White said in a statement last week.
